ARC Products and Med Sled Announce Partnership with Rockwood School District
Emergency evacuation recognized as high priority for the district
ST. LOUIS (January 2010) - ARC Products, manufacturer and innovator of the Med Sled, an emergency evacuation device, is proud to announce its recent partnership with the Rockwood School District.
The district selected ARC Products to help provide additional safety to students. As part of Rockwood's overall emergency preparedness plan, ARC Products and Rockwood joint venture will include the installation of Med Sleds in each of their schools starting with multi storied facilities.
The Med Sled is a cost-effective evacuation sled that empowers non-professionals to evacuate the injured or the immobile when immediate response is required. The compact sleds weigh no more than 10 pounds and rolls up neatly into an easy to store-and-carry bag.
"We are immensely proud that Rockwood Schools have chosen to incorporate the Med Sleds into their plan," said Clifford Adkins, President of ARC Products. "We designed the Med Sled system to fill a 'gap' in evacuation preparedness that Rockwood acknowledges."
The Rockwood School District, the largest public school system in St. Louis County, has recognized the need for specialized planning and is working to ensure safe schools for students, staff and visitors. Rockwood is one of the first districts in the Midwest addressing a call to action from FEMA and the government organization's Ready initiative. In 2009, area voters passed Proposition 3, a $74.5 million bond issue that is financing improvements in safety, technology and other school resources.
"Rockwood sees more than 20,000 students on a regular basis in 32 schools, so it's natural for safety to be a top priority when so many people are involved," said Adkins. "Med Sled's goal is to create the most effective emergency evacuation device by supplying schools with both the necessary tools and procedures to handle a crisis. Our recommendation, and our understanding, is that the majority of these initial sleds will be placed in all of the multi-story buildings to enable the most difficult facilities a means to evacuate and facilitate a complete emergency response."
The Rockwood School District is comprised of 19 elementary schools, six middle schools, four high schools, an Early Childhood Center, a Center for Creative Learning and an Individualized Learning Center. Of these, eight schools are multi-story and create possible obstacles in emergency situations.
The district's comprehensive emergency procedures will serve as a foundation for other area organizations.
To begin outfitting the district for emergency evacuation, Rockwood School District's initial Med Sled purchases will equip all of Rockwood's multi-story buildings with both standard size and bariatric sleds. All evacuation sleds are rated to support up to 1,000 pounds and will be located near major stairwells and exit routes.
