Med Sled Introduces New Emergency Preparedness Products
Youth Sled, Nurse Evacuation Case and Evacuation Bag Ensure No One is Left Behind in Disaster
ST. LOUIS (June 2009) - In the face of disaster, anyone could be called on to evacuate individuals before the arrival of first responders. After years of inadequate solutions, one product may finally be the answer -the Med Sled. The Med Sled enables a single person to evacuate a non-ambulatory individual in a quick and stable fashion, down a flight of stairs. In June, Med Sled is expanding its line and launching three new products, including a Youth Sled for children under 60 inches tall, an Evacuation Capable Storage Case and a Crash Cart Evacuation Bag.
"These new products have enabled us to address additional market needs and challenges of emergency evacuation," said Clifford Adkins, President of ARC Products. "We've seen a lot of demand for youth evacuation devices in schools and pediatric hospitals. The Youth Sled was specifically designed with children in mind and will ensure that many of our customers have complete evacuation solutions."
The unique design of the Youth Sled allows for a safer and more efficient evacuation for children versus the traditional methods of blanket or over-the-shoulder carry. At the foot of the sled, a strap is attached that allows rescue personnel to quickly slide the evacuee to safety. Typically, a person can be loaded into the Youth Sled in under 40 seconds and evacuated from a building in only one minute per floor.
"Elimination of the need for the 'lift and carry' method helps minimize potential injuries to both the rescuer and the rescued individual," said Adkins.
In addition, foam inserts for pediatric transportation are a part of the highly-functional Med Sled product line. The pediatric inserts can allow for transport of up to three infants or one toddler plus emergency medical equipment.
While the Med Sled is capable of transporting emergency equipment with the patient such as oxygen tanks, medical charts and IV bags, the Evacuation Case addresses the need to transport vital medical supplies and equipment. The Crash Cart Evacuation Bag fits over a standard nurses crash cart, allowing safe evacuation of the cart and its contents down a flight of stairs if necessary. Both the Evacuation Case and Crash Cart Evacuation Bag are designed for evacuation by hospital staff and the Case is equipped to function as a medical workstation once it has been deployed outside to assist any alternate care sites.

Typically, these workstations are transported by elevators, but in the case of an emergency, elevators may be unavailable. The Evacuation Case and Crash Cart Bag include two guide tracks and a stairwell braking system to ensure safe descent for multi-floor evacuations.
"Both the Evacuation Case and Crash Cart Evac. Bag are absolutely vital for hospital evacuations and larger equipment that cannot be transported in the sled with the patient," said Adkins. "For example, the Missouri Hospital Association has already purchased more than 1,200 standard sleds for 93 hospitals. The Evacuation Case would be the perfect addition for a hospital operation in the event of an evacuation to an offsite location."
The Med Sled is currently in use in all 50 states, more than 600 hospitals, schools and government facilities nationwide and in six foreign countries. Every Med Sled includes a tether and carabiner breaking system that allows for easy transportation of both evacuees and equipment down stairwells. With the help of the Med Sled, personnel are not required to do heavy lifting that might risk injuring them or the patient. The sled become rigid, protecting the patient, is compact, and can be rolled up for simple storage.
Med Sled, a core product line of ARC Products, includes a Youth sled, Standard Sled, Bariatric Sled (1,000 lb max), wall mounted storage devices, pediatric and infant inserts, and a line of evacuation capable storage cases.
