Southeast Michigan Hospitals Now Disaster Prepared With Med Sled

At any second a natural disaster could strike a hospital or nursing home. Devastating floods, tornadoes, earthquakes and extreme winter weather can wreak havoc by causing building failures and power outages. These types of emergencies call for patient evacuation in a quick and safe manner.

Several Detroit-area hospitals recently took action to prepare for an emergency scenario by purchasing a revolutionary device called the Med Sled. The Med Sled can evacuate patients down a multi-floor building in a fraction of the time of other methods-only 60 seconds to be exact.

4 counties throughout southeast Michigan agreed to purchase 190 Med Sleds as part of their disaster preparedness plan. The agreement will go toward serving 36 Hospitals across the Detroit region. In response to the growing need for an efficient and cost-effective evacuation plan, the Med Sled leaves no patient behind.

Amy Beauregard, Bioterrorism Preparedness Coordinator for region 2 South Medical Bio-Defense Network, said " When vertical evacuation is needed, the turning radius around staircase landings will make evacuation quicker and far easier than is the case with some of the other evacuation devices on the market."

The Med Sled is quite practical and requires minimal staff training to understand its usage. The sled uses a 'roll and drag' method so that no heavy lifting is required. The Med Sled provides a practical and cost-effective solution to hospitals that may be working with budget constraints. Other evacuation devices can cost upwards of $1500, while the Med Sled is reasonably priced at around $250.

Because of its simple design, the Med Sled is very flexible in structure and allows for a quick and improvised use during a difficult situation. "The Med Sled is so easy to load and unload patients without the equipment being pre-staged. Similar devices require that the equipment be placed under hospital cots at all times and this can be quite impractical and expensive," Beauregard continued.

When not in use, the Med Sled can be easily folded and stored away. The Med Sled also features several slots to hold medical equipment, IV bags and Oxygen tanks that might be needed to travel with the patient.

Founded in 2004, ARC Products is an innovative company that develops cost-effective products in support of disaster preparedness planning. The Med Sled offers a viable evacuation solution for hospitals, nursing homes, college campuses, government and corporate entities, military installations and any other facility or institution requiring emergency evacuation plans for non-ambulatory individuals.
